Summer workers
VCU hires students and other individuals as hourly employees during May 10 through Sept. 9 to perform a variety of duties. Because summer workers are hourly employees, please note the following:
- Departments should not pay hourly employees more than classified employees performing similar work in the same area.
- We encourage departments to maintain information on duties performed by all their hourly employees. Completing the brief Wage Position Description form for these employees will satisfy this recommendation.
Contact your HR Professional or call (804) 827-1770 or contact VCU Payroll Services at payroll@vcu.eduor (804) 828-0740.
For current VCU student workers who will continue to work at the university during the summer, there is no need to change their Banner position class or title. For hourly employees who are students, please provide the following information on the Personnel action form):
- Banner position class/title: Use Position Number S00001 - Student Worker
- Hourly rate: Pay must be at least $7.25 an hour
- Employee class: SW
- End date: If the job is ending at the end of the summer, the job end date should be no later than Sept. 9
Please note, for students who work at VCU, Banner will automatically calculate FICA withholdings based on the student's enrollment status during each pay period. When students are not taking classes, FICA will be withheld.
