Career development

The following guidelines apply to all VCU University and Classified staff. It is a fundamental goal of VCU to be a great place to work. Essential to this goal is an institutional commitment to substantive career planning and development throughout the university, including the managerial support necessary for that to be successful. The term "career development" is used to encompass the full range of programs from specialized job-related experiences in a current position to learning and developing opportunities that prepare employees for future career interests.

The university offers learning opportunities for employees to improve current job effectiveness, to prepare for career advancement, and to enhance personal career development. To support employees in realizing their full potential, managers are expected to facilitate their employees’ pursuit of career interests, adopt practices that promote career development throughout their area, and allow employee participation in appropriate opportunities for learning and growth. Both Classified and University Academic Professional employees are eligible to take advantage various career development opportunities at VCU; however Classified employees are not eligible to participate in the career pathing process (e.g, promotion in place).  Visit the career development planning link located on the left, for the career development planning form and other resources for planning.
