Advertise

Advertising is a critical step in the hiring process. Hiring managers must use judgement to determine the best approach to advertising a position in order to yield the best pool of applicants.  It is recommended that hiring managers develop a targeted advertising plan to yield a diverse pool of highly qualified candidates. Specialized recruitment efforts and additional efforts to achieve diverse applicant pools may be required as described in the university’s affirmative action plan. More information on the university’s affirmative action plan can be found at equity.vcu.edu.

The advertising plan delineates the outreach efforts and activities that will be undertaken to increase the pool of applicants. It should include, but not be limited to, the placement of advertisements in publications and/or on listservs; distribution to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and others with programs that serve underrepresented groups; use of placement services, and other recruitment efforts to increase the pool of qualified applicants.

All advertising, including any form of announcement whether by e-mail, letter, the Web, list service, journal, etc., must be approved prior to publication by HR. HR will verify that the advertisement contains consistently correct minimum qualifications and includes the VCU equal employment opportunity statement.

The Advertising Sources List provides a list of recommended publications but is by no means an exhaustive list. Hiring managers are encouraged to utilize publications that would be the most relevant to the knowledge skills, and/or abilities related to the position.

VCU brand marks
VCU provides important tools for developing VCU brand compliant recruitment ads. University and school/department logos are important visual identifiers that build recognition and it is important to use the latest logo files in our printing and advertising. Logo files and other brand identity guidelines (e.g., colors, fonts, editorial style) are available at identity.vcu.edu/.  Log into the “our downloads section” for current files of brand marks (VCU logos) and logos specific to your school or department.
