Employee onboarding
Once a candidate has accepted an offer of employment with the university, the hiring manager, in partnership with HR, must prepare to onboard the new employee. A well thought out and organized orientation is an important step in welcoming and quickly acclimating a new employee to VCU. Onboarding is an investment in employee retention and productivity, and managers play a critical role in planning and implementing the onboarding process for new employees. Often, employees feel a stronger connection to the organization and to their immediate teams when thoughtfully engaged. As a result, these employees are typically more successful contributors. The Onboarding checklist for managers serves as a guide to setting your new employee on a path for success. Adapt it to meet individual school/unit/department’s unique needs, or use it in combination with existing school/unit/department onboarding checklists.
Complete new hire administration
After the hiring decision is made, and an offer has been extended and accepted, the new hire administration process can begin. Human Resources will work with the new employee to obtain necessary information and new hire documentation in order to meet compliance requirements and establish an employment record in VCU information systems. The following items must be addressed by HR:
- Initiate Express Hire
- Collect & submit new hire paperwork
- Generate & submit PAF and copies of signed offer letter/conditions of employment
- Confirm employment eligibility (I-9)
